How to Remove Wine from Carpets

How to Remove Red Wine from Carpets

March 10, 2021

It happens to everyone; you’re having a party, celebrating with a glass of wine and someone knocks over a glass or your home alone and you have a clumsy moment and spill your wine. It can seem like a disaster, but your carpet can be easily solved with these household solutions!

Before Applying the Solution: As soon as you see the stain or right after the spill happens, grab a dry cloth or paper towel and blot the stain to prevent it from settling into your carpet. Start blotting at the edges of the stain and slowly move inward to the center to prevent the stain from spreading and becoming larger.

Once you have blotted up the stain or the stain is dry, add some cold water to the spot to further dilute the stain and blot up the water. Continue to blot until the carpet is dry again.

After you have blotted up the water and reduced the stain, you can begin by using your preferred solution to help remove the stain from your carpet.

Remember: Always do a test of the solution on a hidden part of your carpet to make sure there will not be any damage from the solution you are using.

Almost every solution can be used following this process:

  1. Apply the solution of your choice to the stain
  2. Blot away the solution
  3. Repeat this process until the stain is gone

Solution 1 Salt: You can use salt to absorb the wine stain. If the stain has dried, add a bit of water to the stain before you apply the salt. Pour some salt onto the stain area and let it set overnight. Do not scrub or blot the salt. Check the salt in the morning. There should be crystallized salt that appears pink. Scoop up the salt and vacuum up the area to remove it. The stain should be gone.

Solution 2 White Vinegar: White vinegar is an amazing household cleaning tool and can be used to clean carpets as well! Start by mixing one tablespoon of white vinegar and one tablespoon of dishwashing liquid with two cups of warm water.

This technique works best for a wine stain that has already dried. Apply the solution to the stain, but do not use the whole two cups of the solution.

Use a cloth or sponge to dab the solution onto the stain and and saturate the carpet. Then use a clean dry cloth to blot away the solution and remove the stain. Repeat the process until the stain has lifted.

Solution 3 Baking Soda: Once you have blotted away all of the wine stain that you can, make a baking soda paste to help remove the stain.

Mix one-part water with three-parts baking soda to create a paste and apply it to the stain.

Wait for the paste to dry and then vacuum up the dried paste. The stain should be gone!

Solution 4 Club Soda: Club Soda is also a good option to help remove red wine stains. Directly apply club soda to the stain with a sponge or cloth and blot the solution until the stain is removed.

Solution 5 Hydrogen Peroxide: Hydrogen peroxide is similar to white vinegar when removing a wine stain. Mix two-parts hydrogen peroxide with one-part dishwashing liquid. Apply the solution with a sponge or cloth and let the solution soak in for 5-10 minutes. This solution should not be used on a colored carpet because it will bleach and damage the carpet.

Conclusion: There is no need to worry if you spill any wine at a party, you have an arsenal of household solutions to save your carpet!
